Video shows moments after crash involving off-duty Albuquerque police officer
Newly released video captures chaotic moments after a crash involving an off-duty Albuquerque police officer and a woman quickly escalates into a physical confrontation. This is a look at why prosecutors say his actions crossed the line.
"All I saw was him grabbing her and pushing her to the side of the car and kind of yanking her. That's what I saw. It was very, very rough," said one witness.
"I heard the hit, and then he immediately pulled over and just bulldogged right over to her, started barking at her and swung her car door open," said another witness.
"That's when I said 'woah… that's aggressive,'" a third witness added.
What started as a minor traffic accident quickly turned into an unpredictable situation. On March 28, Albuquerque police arrived to a crash near Paseo del Norte and Universe involving 42-year-old off-duty APD officer Shawn Ginn and a 33-year-old woman. "I said, 'let me give you my information' and he said 'you're not going anywhere…' and he like shoved me on the car," said the victim.
Investigators say Ginn was in the passenger seat while his wife was driving when a car hit them from behind. That's when Ginn steps out and confronts the woman, forcing her out of her car, slamming her against the vehicle, and pulling her arm behind her back, while not disclosing he was an off-duty officer.
Court records say Ginn told police he believed the woman was drunk, but investigators determined she was not impaired. A grand jury has since indicted Ginn on a charge of false imprisonment – a felony – as well as misdemeanor battery charges.
According to Albuquerque police, Ginn retired before his internal affairs investigation could be completed.
